What Is It Like To Study Journalism At University?

Updated: Apr 12, 2020

In September 2019, I started studying Fashion and Beauty Journalism.

I chose this course as it takes a specific route of journalism, combining my two passions of the media world and fashion. It is one of the few universities in the country that offers this particular course, therefore didn't know what to fully expect.

This first semester we have learnt more of the general, key journalistic skills - focusing on getting our writing correct, learning the layout of journalism pieces and the different platforms journalists can use (Twitter, blogs, websites, written, etc...). This has been great practise and identifying which one is used to attract different audiences.

We have also tried a 'Piece to Camera', which was a bit out of my comfort zone but a really good concept to show your audience that you are currently at the location of a story. This is also an important skill to have when it comes to future employability opportunities.

We have also been encouraged to find sources (people) that relate to our stories or can offer an authoritative voice on the situation. These can be found on social medias (such as Twitter) or through more thorough research. I have found this to be quite difficult with the stories that I like to write, based on the fashion and beauty world. However, I like the challenge and hopefully will be able to improve this skills as I continue my studies of journalism.

I am excited to incorporate more fashion and beauty into my articles, and start one of my next modules which is trend forecasting in fashion.
